About us:

Department of Neuropathology was established in 1957 as scientific laboratory of Polish Academy of Sciences. Since its foundation the Department was led by: prof. Adam Opalski, prof. Ewa Osetowska, prof. Miroslaw J. Mossakowski, doc. Irmina Zelman, prof. Andrzej Kapuscinski, prof. Janina Rafalowska and prof. Danuta Maslinska. The head of the Department of Developmental Neuropathology was Prof. Maria Dambska.
In the Department of Neuropathology, the highly specialized medical professionals are engaged including neuropathologists and/or neurologists. The main research area is focused on pathology of central nervous system studied in vivo and in vitro. Special emphasis is given to problems of clinical, experimental, developmental and comparative neuropathology as well as neurooncology. The Department is capable to provide various methodological techniques to prepare specimens for adequate neuropathological studies (histopathology, histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, electrophoresis, immunoblotting and molecular studies).

 

Key Research themes:

Phenotypic and genotypic profile of tumours of the central nervous system, neurodegeneration and brain ischemia.

  • Evaluation of molecular heterogeneity of tumours of the nervous system and its influence on diagnosis and clinical prognosis.
  • Study on the antiproliferative effect of selected cytostatic compounds on in vitro glial tumour cells.
  • Mechanism of neuroprotection in models of CNS diseases in vivo and in vitro.
  • Evaluation of hyperbaric oxygenation mechanisms in the model of global cerebral ischemia.

The studies are performed on autopsy, biopsy/surgical specimens and experimental model, (ischemia, animal model of fALS) and cell cultures (organotypic tissue cultures and cell lines).

 

Other forms of activity:

  • Pathological training program: organization of medical training courses in clinical neuropathology and neurooncology for professionals and lectures and seminars for medical students.
  • Consultation of rare, difficult neurooncological and neuropathological cases.
  • Archived material (paraffin blocks and slides):  large collections of archived human tissue, examined in the clinical diagnostics from 1961 to 2011 years including cases of fetal, neonatal and infantile developmental disabilities; cases of adult disorders (about 250 AIDS cases from MJ. Mossakowski collection; biopsies of CNS neoplasms.

Accreditation: Department of Clinical and Experimental Neuropathology has received full credit for 5 year training program in Neuropathology (as one of a few accredited institutions in Poland). The neuropathology training program will include pathology of the diseases of central and peripheral nervous system and skeletal muscle.

  • “Design and validation of multi-gene transcriptional signature as molecular diagnostic tool in paediatric brain tumours”, grant NCN no 2016/21/B/NZ2/01785; project in consortium with the Children's Memorial Health Institute, principal investigator: MD, PhD. Maria Łastowska (2017-2020)
