This competition is addressed to students of bioinformatics, computer science, programming, or computer techniques.
We are recruiting for the OPUS project No. 2020/37/B/NZ5/02424 entitled „MicroRNAome maturation control and its application in selective targeting of cancer stem cells” funded by the National Science Centre and carried out at the Department of Neurooncology at the Mossakowski Medical Research Institute, Polish Academy of Sciences (MMRI PAS). Dr. Jakub Godlewski leads the project.
The competition is open to persons who meet the conditions specified in the regulations for awarding research scholarships by the National Science Center in OPUS grants (Resolution of the NCN Council No. 25/2019 of 14 March 2019).
Project Description:
Practical analysis and visualization of cancer biology data are often compromised by its inherent complexity and the significant demands of the required computer programming skills. To address these barriers, we propose the creation of a user-friendly web platform designed to streamline the integration and visualization of diverse omics data.
The primary objective is to develop a platform that enhances the distribution and sharing of scientific findings derived from advanced technologies, including next-generation sequencing and mass spectrometry. This platform will promote open science by providing interactive and easily accessible data to a broad scientific community.
Responsibilities of the IT Fellow / Intern:
1. Collaboration in the design and development of biostatistical tools:
- Assist in designing and developing software to analyze and visualize complex biological datasets
- Integrate visualization tools that are compatible and efficient across various web browsers
- Maintain active engagement in the research project through mandatory participation in regular project team meetings, aimed at:
- discussing research progress,
- identifying and solving ongoing research issues,
- jointly planning further analytical stages and research strategies.
2. Data analysis and visualization:
- Actively participate in analyzing large-scale biological datasets to support cancer research objectives
- Develop a seamless, intuitive graphical interface that allows researchers to explore, navigate, and download data, promoting open data practices
3. User interface and functionality improvements:
- Design a user-friendly graphical interface for easy dataset navigation and interaction
- Implement search and filtering functionalities that utilize experimental metadata
- Develop and integrate sophisticated visualization tools to present omics data clearly and effectively
- Ensure the platform supports common data visualization and graphing functions
4. Documentation and training:
Collaborate in the creation of comprehensive documentation and training materials to assist users in effectively navigating the new platform.
5. Ongoing Project Engagement:
Maintain active engagement in the research project through mandatory participation in regular project team meetings, aimed at:
- discussing research progress,
- identifying and solving ongoing scientific challenges,
- jointly planning the following stages of data analysis and research strategy.
Opportunity for Interns:
The internship offers students a unique opportunity to apply their technical skills in real-world research settings, contributing to the development of novel methods and tools in cancer research.
Requirements:
- enrolment in an undergraduate, graduate, integrated Master’s or doctoral program at a university in Poland in the fields of bioinformatics, computer science, programming, IT technologies, or biostatistics
- interest in applying bioinformatics solutions in medicine and life sciences
- basic knowledge of programming (Python or R, SQL, Java)
- understanding of large-scale database statistics
- attention to detail, open-mindedness, and problem-solving skills
- participation in scientific clubs or relevant training is a plus
- good command of English
We offer:
- Opportunity to gain valuable professional experience at a prestigious PAS (Polish Academy of Sciences) Institute conducting research in medical biology and translational medicine.
- Friendly working environment.
- Scientific scholarship.
Please submit the following documents:
- motivation letter containing information about scientific interests, research work, and explaining why you want to work on the project
- resume/CV including details of previous education, scientific achievements, awards
- documents confirming student status.
Candidates will be considered by the Scholarship Committee, with the project manager as chairman. The committee will assess the candidates' competences to perform specific tasks in the research project on a point scale, as outlined in § 3.14 of the Regulations for awarding research scholarships in research projects financed by the National Science Center.
