The current research program of the Laboratory of Molecular Basis of Neurodegeneration:
- cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of central nervous system disorders (Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, ischemic stroke, excitotoxicity)
- molecular basis of differential sensitivity of individual neuronal populations to specific neurotoxic factors
- arginine metabolism in the pathology of the striatum and hippocampus
- molecular and cellular determinants of the unique properties of hippocampal region CA2
- the role of mitochondrial calcium flux in the vulnerability of hippocampal subregions to injury
- application of amyloid protein amplification methods in the search for novel therapies for neurodegenerative diseases
The area of the research in which the candidate would participate:
- the role of arginase 2 in the function of striatal neuronal mitochondria and its impact on their vulnerability to injury
- neuropathological analysis of a pharmacological mouse model of Huntington’s disease under conditions of arginase 2 deficiency
- interactions between arginine metabolism pathways and mitochondrial calcium uptake in the differential vulnerability of hippocampal subregions to injury
Description of job position activities:
- generation of experimental models and collection of biological material
- conducting in vivo studies
- performing biochemical, histological, and imaging experiments
- implementation of new research technologies to improve the quality of scientific studies
- active participation in the scientific activities of the Laboratory, the Institute, and the broader scientific community
- active acquisition of research funding through the preparation of grant proposals in accordance with funding agency requirements
- active involvement in the implementation of research projects in compliance with funding agency requirements
- preparation of research reports
- analysis and presentation of obtained data
- preparation of manuscripts and their publication
- preparation of conference communications and representation of the Institute at scientific conferences
- active participation in seminars, courses, and training programs
Requirements:
- MSc degree (or equivalent) in medical sciences, biological sciences, or a related field
- experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, histology, and microscopy techniques, such as PCR, qPCR, western blotting, fluorimetric/spectrophotometric assays, enzymatic assays, histological/immunohistochemical tissue staining, brightfield microscopy, confocal microscopy
- experience in working with rodents (supported with appropriate certifications)
- experience in cell/tissue cultures
- ability to analyse and present research data;
- knowledge of statistical methods used in scientific research
- independence and good organizational skills
- creativity and ability to work in a team
- indication of Mossakowski Medical Research Institute, Polish Academy of Sciences as the first place of employment
- fluency in English, both spoken and written
Additional requirements (desirable):
- experience with animal models of neurodegenerative diseases
- practical knowledge of mouse and/or rat brain anatomy
- documented participation in scientific conferences
- authorship/co-authorship of scientific publications
- ability to design, organize, and conduct scientific research and to propose research hypotheses
