The current research program of the Laboratory of Molecular Basis of Neurodegeneration:

• cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of central nervous system disorders (Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, ischemic stroke, excitotoxicity)
• molecular basis of differential sensitivity of individual neuronal populations to specific neurotoxic factors
• arginine metabolism in the pathology of the striatum and hippocampus
• molecular and cellular determinants of the unique properties of hippocampal region CA2
• the role of mitochondrial calcium flux in the vulnerability of hippocampal subregions to injury
• application of amyloid protein amplification methods in the search for novel therapies for neurodegenerative diseases

 The area of the research in which the candidate would participate:

• the role of arginase 2 in the function of striatal neuronal mitochondria and its impact on their vulnerability to injury
• neuropathological analysis of a pharmacological mouse model of Huntington’s disease under conditions of arginase 2 deficiency
• interactions between arginine metabolism pathways and mitochondrial calcium uptake in the differential vulnerability of hippocampal subregions to injury

 Description of job position activities:

• generation of experimental models and collection of biological material
• conducting in vivo studies
• performing biochemical, histological, and imaging experiments
• implementation of new research technologies to improve the quality of scientific studies
• active participation in the scientific activities of the Laboratory, the Institute, and the broader scientific community
• active acquisition of research funding through the preparation of grant proposals in accordance with funding agency requirements
• active involvement in the implementation of research projects in compliance with funding agency requirements
• preparation of research reports
• analysis and presentation of obtained data
• preparation of manuscripts and their publication

 Requirements:

• MSc degree (or equivalent) in medical sciences, biological sciences, or a related field
• experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, histology, and microscopy techniques, such as PCR, qPCR, western blotting, fluorimetric/spectrophotometric assays, enzymatic assays, histological/immunohistochemical tissue staining, brightfield microscopy, confocal microscopy
• experience in working with rodents (supported with appropriate certifications)
• experience in cell/tissue cultures
• ability to analyse and present research data;
• knowledge of statistical methods used in scientific research
• independence and good organizational skills
• creativity and ability to work in a team
• indication of Mossakowski Medical Research Institute, Polish Academy of Sciences as the first place of employment
• fluency in English, both spoken and written

 
Additional requirements (desirable):

• experience with animal models of neurodegenerative diseases

• novel antimicrobial wound dressings tests to treat chronic wounds, e.g., diabetic foot, ulcers
• biofilm formation studies and searching for novel eradication methods
• structural studies of mechanisms of bacterial autolysin activation as a target of antimicrobial treatment

The area of the research in which the candidate would participate:

• development of new antimicrobials using structural studies and protein engineering methods
• antimicrobial assays optimization to test novel antimicrobials efficiency, specificity and stability
• testing of antimicrobial activity of newly generated formulations and wound dressings supplemented with antimicrobials
• optimizing in vitro models to test medical applications of antimicrobials, e.g., skin models, wound models etc.

Description of job position activities:

• generation of novel enzymes/proteins, based on known sequences: obtaining recombinant proteins, study their activity, adjustment of optimal conditions, testing specificity
• improvement of antimicrobials activity by development of chimeric proteins
• optimization of antimicrobials tests according to requirements of target applications
• development of formulation supplemented with antimicrobial, e.g., gels, creams, wound dressings in which its activity and stability will be preserved and stable
• implementing new protocols and methods to improve the quality of scientific research in the Laboratory
• assisting in preparation of grant applications according to the call requirements

• analysing, developing, and presenting the obtained data at regular internal meetings

Requirements:

• at least a Ph.D. degree in medical, biological or related sciences

• experience in the research work on protein engineering, protein structural studies and biotechnology documented by publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference abstracts
• experience (minimum 5 years) in laboratory work, preferably in molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, microbiology)

Description of job position activities:

• optimization of bacterial biofilms growth, their visualization in vitro using various staining methods and microscopy
• biofilm eradication assays optimization using combination of novel antimicrobials
• isolation and identification of bacteria from various sources, testing their susceptibility to antimicrobials

The current research program of the Tumor Microenvironment Laboratory:
• investigation of tumor microenvironment biology, with particular emphasis on glioblastoma (GBM)
and glioblastoma stem-like cells (GSCs) that initiate tumor development;
• elucidation of the mechanisms governing interactions between tumor cells and the microenvironment;
• analysis of the role of extracellular vesicles in intercellular communication and modulation of the tumor microenvironment;
• development of novel therapeutic strategies, including approaches based on immunotherapy and oncolytic viruses;
• development and application of advanced experimental models, including 3D cultures, organoids, and in vivo models;
• integration of multi-omic data in translational glioblastoma research.

The area of the research in which the candidate would participate:
• studies on the role of the tumor microenvironment in regulating glioblastoma cell growth, plasticity,
and invasiveness;
• analysis of communication mechanisms between tumor cells and immune cells;
• development and application of ex vivo and in vivo models for the evaluation of novel immunotherapeutic strategies;
• analysis of molecular and cellular changes induced by anticancer therapies;
• identification of biomarkers of therapeutic response in glioblastoma using multi-omic approaches.

Description of job position activities:
• conducting research using 3D models, including organoids;
• participating in the design and implementation of in vivo studies, as well as collection and processing of biological material;
• preparing material for high-throughput analyses, including transcriptomic, and proteomic analyses;
• implementing new research technologies to improve the quality of scientific studies;
• active participation in the scientific activities of the Laboratory, the Institute, and the scientific community;

• experience in laboratory work involving cell culture, 3D models, and preparation of material for transcriptomic, proteomic, and immunological analyses;
• experience in working with animal models, including valid authorization to conduct experiments on laboratory animals;
• experience in the analysis and interpretation of biological, immunological, and omics data;
• documented activity in applying for research funding or participation in the preparation of grant applications;
• experience in developing research results and preparing reports and scientific manuscripts;
• independence and good organizational skills;
• creativity and ability to work in a team;
